Behind the Scenes: Drama Department
Story and Photos by:  Ella Floyd

The days of classical, tap-shoe armed actors and actresses are over as Buena Vista City Public School students bring a modern twist to your typical theatre production. Students aged Kindergarten through high school seniors eagerly work to bring the area a spring musical theatre review, or, “a showcase of a wide range of musicals and talents,” as director Jessica Jolley states.

BVCPS students frequent Parry McCluer Middle School after their normal school hours to rehearse choreography, music, and acting for these fun, modern numbers. Some of these numbers include, If Only You Would Listen, from the musical show-stopper School of Rock based off of the 2003 Jack Black Movie, and You Will Be Found from the six-time Tony Award winning musical Dear Evan Hansen. Although some new songs are being showcased, classics like One Day More from Les Miserables, and Seize the Day from Newsies.

“I’m looking forward for the audience to see how much work has been put into both newer songs AND classic hits,” Jolley says. Jolley also emphasized her excitement for seeing her students grow and succeed through this production. While the theatre department continues to grow, it continues to be a, “great place to learn and to join a tight-knit, loving family,” as well. The cast and crew hope to see friends new and old in the audience of this February 2019 production.
