Three Earn Medals at State Tournament

Parry McCluer sent four wrestlers to the Class 1 State Wrestling Championships in Salem Feb. 17-18, and three of them came home with medals.

Leading the way was 285-pounder Forrest Vassar, who placed second in his class. Trent Fitzgerald, at 182, placed third, while Nick Craft (138) took four place. Tyler Royer also earned a spot in the event but did not finish in the top six.

Despite having only four wrestlers in the tournament, the Blues placed 10th as a team, tallying 52 points. Grundy won the team title with 230.5 points, followed by Rural Retreat, Riverheads, Grayson County and Mathews to round out the top five.

Vassar’s journey to the 285 finals was heart-stopping, to say the least. After a win over Rappahannock County’s William Taplin in the first round, Vassar had to score two points in the final seconds of the third period to force overtime and score a 6-4 sudden victory over John Wood of Riverheads. The PM junior then scored three points late in the third period to edge Blake Barker of Cumberland, 3-1, and earn a spot in the championship match.

The final was more of the same and went as far as a high school wrestling match can go before Brender Rojas of Galax eked out a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker victory.

Fitzgerald won a pair of matched on the first day to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinals. He first pinned Kwami Mitchell of Franklin in 1:18 before scoring a 5-2 decision over Quinton Dixon of Mathews. In the semifinal, Fitzgerald dropped an 8-0 decision.

In the consolation bracket, the PM senior won a pair of matches to grab third place. He first pinned Logan Adams of Chilhowie in 2:21 to set up a rematch with Dixon in the consolation finals. Fitzgerald held on to win that match, 1-0.

At 138 pounds, Craft also earned a spot in the semifinals. He received a bye in the first round and then pinned Ronny Horton of Galax in 1:43. In the semifinals, Craft dropped a 9-3 decision to Tyler Schaller of Mathews.

In the consolation rounds, Craft, a senior, built up a commanding 6-0 lead after two periods and went on to defeat Andrew Temple of George Wythe, 13-1. But in the third place match, Craft fell to Grayson County’s Trey Allen, 7-6.

Royer, a senior wrestling at 106, lost a pair of close matches at the tournament.

PM Wrestlers Earn Spots in State Tournament

Five Parry McCluer wrestlers are heading to the state tournament.

By virtue of finishing in the top six of their respective weight classes at the West Super Regional held Feb. 14 and 15 at Grayson County High School, Nick Craft, Tyler Royer, Trent Fitzgerald, Kabell Austin and Forrest Vassar all earned spots all earned spots in the Class 1A state championships Feb. 21 and 22 at the Salem Civic Center.

Craft, a senior, was the top finisher for the Blues, taking second place at 138 pounds. He opened the tournament with a 15-0 technical fall over Chilhowie’s Jason Louthian and advanced to the finals when he pinned Mason Via of Rural Retreat in 1:52. In the finals, Craft was paired against Grundy’s Chris Stiltner, last year’s state champion at 132, falling by pin in 1:14.

Also a senior, Royer lost his first match of the tournament, suffering an 8-3 decision to Castlewood’s Adam Gibson. He battled back through the consolations rounds, however, pinning Parker Stone of Rural Retreat in 57 seconds and scoring an 8-5 win over Isaiah Osborne of Grayson County. In the consolation finals, Royer dropped an 11-1 major decision to Auburn’s Devin Davis to finish in fourth place.
