Blues Sweep Twin Bill to Open Season

Parry McCluer’s 2023 baseball debut could not have been more thrilling as the Blues twice rallied from late deficits to complete a sweep of a doubleheader against Liberty Thursday, March 16, in Buena Vista.

Trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning of the first of the two five-inning games, the Blues rallied for five runs to eke out a 7-4 victory. Tanner Coleman scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, while Evan Cook tallied what proved to be the winning run on a passed ball.

The Blues mustered just five hits in the game but did take advantage of five walks, four in the decisive fourth inning, and four errors to earned the first win of the season.

The late dramatics of the first game hardly compared to the fireworks of the second.

Down 10-7 in the top of the fifth, the Blues, playing as the visiting team in the nightcap, were down to their final strike when Jase Barger drilled a two-out, three-run home run over the left field fence to help overcome seven errors and send the game into extra innings.

Parry McCluer exploded for six runs in the first extra frame to pull out the 16-10 victory and complete the sweep of the doubleheader. Tyler Wade earned the victory on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief while striking out four.

Wade also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Mills had three hits with two runs and two RBI, while Peyton Ramsey finished with two hits and two runs scored. Barger and Aaron Pruett drove in four and three runs, respectively.
