Blues Advance In Region 1C Tournament

Victoria Hamilton scored a career-high 21 points, including 13 of Parry McCluer’s 15 points in the first half, as the Blues toppled Galax in the first round of the Region 1C girls basketball tournament Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Buena Vista.

The Blues, now sporting a 22-2 record on the season, trailed by two points at the end of the first period, but Hamilton opened the second with two free throws to tie the game. The sophomore then tallied her team’s next six points. When she drove the lane for a layup at the 4:20 mark of the quarter, she gave the Blues an 11-9 lead, and the Blues never trailed again.

The Maroon Tide kept it close, trailing just 15-13 at halftime, but the Blues opened the third quarter with a 10-1 run to push the lead to 25-14 with 4:46 to play in the period. Galax got no closer than six points the rest of the way.

After missing 16 free throws in their last game, the Blues sealed this one at the line, hitting 11 of their 15 foul shots in the fourth quarter.

In addition to Hamilton’s 21 points, Anna Claytor added 12, and Natalie Mohler, who made five of six free throws in the final stanza, finished with 11.

Parry McCluer, which won the Pioneer District’s regular-season and tournament titles, will face Fort Chiswell in the tournament’s semifinals Friday night at Pulaski County High School, with tip-off slated for 8 p.m.
